Balanced Hiring: How To Balance Culture And Competence. (The Worksheet)

*Upon request, this month I will give you one worksheet and walk you through how to use it over the following weeks

When it comes to hiring, most people fall into one of three camps:

  • “If they have the technical skills, everything else will fall into place.”
  • “If they’re a cultural fit, the rest will work out.”
  • “If it feels right, that’s enough.”

Hiring approach

These instincts aren’t wrong—but relying on just one can lead to trouble.

  • If you hire only for technical skill, you risk a team that doesn’t gel
  • If you hire only for cultural fit, you might lack diverse skills and views
  • If you hire only based on instinct, you’re likely to miss out on both talent and cohesion.

Hiring balance

The truth is you want to consider all three points — skill, culture, connection — and find the right amount of each in your candidates.

Each person is more than one thing, and each role requires more than one thing.

Hiring worksheet

With this month’s* worksheet you will list

  • 3 guiding principles for your business
    • behaviors that support those principles
  • 3 guiding principles for the role you are hiring
    • behaviors that support those principles
  • The level of technical skill required for the job

And use that as your guide to evaluate candidates.
