Delegation Isn’t Doing Less: It’s Thinking Less

A list of tasks ending with: “and run it by me when you are done”.

This is how many people delegate.

The problem? That’s not delegation — it’s moving from doing it all to micromanaging.

To move from micromanaging to real delegation, you need one more step.

The challenge

The hardest part of delegation is letting go of control.

To truly delegate your work, you have to let go of responsibility and control. You have to function on trust.

You have to stop doing the thing and let somebody else do it entirely.

Until you have trust, you do not have delegation.

The approach

So don’t delegate “Work”.

Delegate responsibility.

Delegation isn’t just about doing fewer tasks — it’s about freeing mental space.

If you still have to remember, check, or correct, you haven’t truly let go.

Decide what others in your business can own and be accountable for.

Don’t tell them what to do: tell them what has to happen, tell them what it will look like in the end, tell them how it affects the rest of the business.

And then trust them to get it done.

The result

Delegation from you is commitment by others that they will make something happen.

That will result in much more than you saving time. It will also:

  • Improve productivity
  • Grow your employees
  • Increase trust

And make your business stronger. Start with the attached worksheet.
