Sharing Goals: Focus on Conversation, Not Commands.

An essential component of a mystery novel is explaining the motive for the crime.
The motive gives the story its purpose—it’s the current that propels every twist and turn. When the motive and solution are revealed, all the pieces fall into place.
Likewise, when you share your business plans and goals with your employees, it’s a great time to align work and ambitions.
Dialogue over direction
Imagine marching into your workplace, clipboard in hand, and saying: “Starting today, we’re doubling our output. No excuses!”
Now picture something different. Imagine leaving the clipboard behind, and saying “Here’s where we are, here’s where we want to go, and I’d love your input on how we get there.”
You picture people leaning in, taking an interest. Because with this second approach, you are inviting dialogue.
Goals and shared experience
Last week, we talked about explaining your goals.
The real magic happens when you open the floor.
Ask for feedback. Where do your employees see the business going? Do they see potential roadblocks? Do they have ideas for making the goal more attainable?
Hold an open discussion about what needs to happen next.
Communication done right
Rolling out new goals should feel less like issuing orders and more like inviting your team on a journey.
Dialogue—not just instruction—fosters trust, creativity, and commitment. When people are part of the conversation, they’re far more likely to own the outcome.
So next time you set a new goal, remember: it’s not about telling people what to do. Together, you’ll figure out how to get where you’re going.
